Description
Domaine René Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Côte Blonde is a Syrah from the paler soils of the southern half of the Côte-Rôtie hill, in the northern Rhône.
Côte-Rôtie divides, by long tradition, into the Côte Brune to the north and the Côte Blonde to the south; local legend has it that a lord of Maugiron split his land between two daughters, one fair and one dark, though the names more likely describe the soils themselves. The Blonde sits on granitic gneiss with sandier topsoil and a covering of loess, and it is here that Viognier has historically been interplanted among the Syrah and picked and fermented alongside it. Every terrace is worked by hand. René Rostaing took over the vineyards of Albert Dervieux-Thaïze and Marius Gentaz-Dervieux when they retired, and his son Pierre now runs the domaine at Ampuis.
Decant and serve at around seventeen degrees with roast lamb or game; it will improve for a decade and more.
