Domaine Schoffit Gewurztraminer Cuvée Caroline 2023

Domaine Schoffit Gewurztraminer Cuvée Caroline is the estate's Gewurztraminer from the Harth lieu-dit outside Colmar, made in a barely off-dry style.

Gewurztraminer is the most instantly recognisable of Alsace's grapes, thick-skinned and pink-tinged, naturally low in acidity and quick to accumulate sugar, which makes both site and picking date critical. The Harth is a warm terrace of limestone gravel on the plain outside Colmar, in the rain shadow of the Vosges and among the driest vineyard land in France; it ripens Gewurztraminer fully while the free-draining stones keep vigour in check. Domaine Schoffit, founded by Bernard Schoffit and now run with his son Alexandre, farms organically, presses the fruit slowly and ferments in stainless steel, stopping with a small amount of sugar unfermented, here 8.6 grams per litre, which reads as breadth of texture rather than as sweetness.

Broad, perfumed and full-bodied with only a trace of sugar, it suits Munster cheese, foie gras and Thai or Indian dishes; serve chilled at around 10 degrees.
