Domaine Schoffit Gewurztraminer Rangen Grand Cru 2023

Domaine Schoffit Gewurztraminer Rangen Grand Cru comes from the Clos Saint-Théobald on the volcanic terraces of the Rangen de Thann.

The Rangen is the southernmost grand cru of Alsace and the only one on volcanic soil, a terraced slope above Thann of dark, shattered greywacke and tuff that falls away at gradients of up to ninety per cent, where every task is done by hand and erosion is a constant battle. Domaine Schoffit farms the Clos Saint-Théobald, the lower part of the cru, and has worked it for several decades, farming the vineyard organically. On this ground Gewurztraminer loses the blowsiness it can show elsewhere, the volcanic rock lending a smoky, almost salty grip that cuts against the grape's natural breadth. Fruit is picked by hand and pressed gently, and the wine is fermented slowly and raised on its lees before bottling.

Rich, smoky and full-bodied, it suits Munster, foie gras and strongly spiced dishes; serve chilled at around 10 degrees.
