Description
Schoffit Pinot Gris VT Rangen Grand Cru is a late harvest Pinot Gris from the volcanic terraces of the Clos Saint Theobald at Thann.
Vendanges Tardives sets a high bar for Pinot Gris in Alsace: the minimum must weight is higher than for Riesling, picking must be by hand, chaptalisation is banned and the wine is held before release. Rangen de Thann suits the category because its dark volcanic rock stores heat while the steep southern exposure and the cool air off the Thur draw the harvest into late autumn, so sugar builds slowly and often with some botrytis. Schoffit works the Clos Saint Theobald in hand tended terraces and has long specialised in this style. The wine carries 71 grams per litre of residual sugar.
Rich and unctuous but carried by the smoky grip of the site, it suits foie gras, roast duck with fruit and blue cheese; serve at around 10 degrees.
