Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martins 2021

Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martins is a red from two due-south parcels of mature Pinot Noir in one of the village’s most highly regarded vineyards.

Mercurey is the largest appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise, and its reds carry more structure than most in that part of Burgundy. Les Champs Martins borders Les Combins to the west and has historically been counted among Mercurey’s finest sites; almost every leading grower in the village holds a piece of it. Theulot Juillot works two parcels of mature vines here, on a section of slope that faces due south. Jasper Morris has described the reddish soil as carrying a plethora of small white stones, giving rounded wines of some elegance, and that matches the domaine’s style: balanced and finely spiced rather than heavy, with small red fruits, a latticed texture and a long, salty-spicy finish. The oak is still knitting in on release.

Give it another year and it will drink well for up to a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, veal or a plate of Comté.
