Description
Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey 1er Cru Les Croichots is drawn from four parcels totalling 1.2 hectares in a premier cru of shifting soils.
Mercurey is the largest of the Côte Chalonnaise appellations and the one most associated with red wine, with a long list of premiers crus on its limestone slopes. Theulot-Juillot, based in the village, farms across a number of them. Les Croichots sits directly next to Les Combins, but despite the few metres between them the ground changes: meagre marl on the upper part of the slope gives way from midway down to a thicker, stonier red clay. Those two soil types account for the combination of perfume and substance in the wine. The domaine works four separate parcels here, covering both sectors and amounting to 1.2 hectares in all.
Ready after two or three years and good for eight; serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, beef bourguignon or a plate of Époisses.
