Description
Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey 1er Cru Les Croichots comes from four parcels on the blue marl and stony red clay next to Les Combins.
Mercurey is the largest of the Côte Chalonnaise appellations and the one most given over to Pinot Noir, with a long list of premier crus on the limestone slopes either side of the village. Les Croichots sits directly adjacent to Les Combins, but for all that the two are only metres apart, the soils differ: meagre blue marl on the upper slopes gives way to a more complex, thicker, stony red clay from midway down. Theulot-Juillot, a long-established family domaine in Mercurey, farms four parcels here covering 1.2 hectares, each vinified according to what the site gives. Les Croichots shows the more aromatic side of the pair at this stage, a pulpy, fleshy style of Pinot Noir with ripe small red fruits, spice and savoury depth, kept in balance by a fine, lengthy finish.
Drinking well now and good for another six to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, duck breast or grilled mushrooms.
