Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2020

Domaine Theulot-Juillot Mercurey Vieilles Vignes is a village red drawn from three lieux-dits with an average vine age of just over 50 years.

Each site brings something different. Les Montelons sits at the top of the Mercurey slope at 300 metres on beige marl and gives tightly packed fruit and freshness. Le Clos Laurent, sheltered from the wind in the centre of the village, brings earthiness and darker fruit. Les Vaux, in a deep valley to the north of the town at around 250 metres, supplies both density and bite. Blended, they make what the domaine describes as Mercurey's answer to Gevrey-Chambertin. Everything is destemmed at the winery, and most of the wine spends 12 months in barrel with around 20 per cent new oak, a small proportion staying in tank for this bottling. The vine age is what gives the wine its concentration.

Approachable from two years and worth eight to ten. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, coq au vin or a hard sheep's cheese.
