Domaine Vincent Dancer Pommard 1er Cru Les Pézerolles 2020

Vincent Dancer's Pommard Les Pézerolles comes from a third of a hectare of vines planted in 1977 in one of the finest Premiers Crus on the Beaune side of the village.

Les Pézerolles sits on the upper slope of Pommard towards Beaune, on clay and limestone that give a wine noticeably finer in frame than the sturdy, iron-rich crus at the Volnay end such as the Rugiens. Vincent Dancer, an engineer by training, took over a handful of family parcels in 1996 at the age of twenty-two and built his cellar the following year; the domaine now runs to around six hectares scattered across Chassagne, Puligny, Meursault, Pommard and Beaune, and his son Théo has been running the day-to-day since the middle of the last decade. He was the first grower in Chassagne to certify organic, in 2012, after farming that way from 2006, and works the premier cru rows with a horse. The reds are handled with the same restraint as the whites: careful picking, spontaneous fermentation, ageing in used barrels rather than new, and bottling without fining or filtration, so the wine leans towards perfume and detail rather than extraction.

Give it three to five years and expect a decade or more of life. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, braised beef or a mushroom tart.
