Description
Egon Müller Scharzhof Qualitats Riesling is the house wine of one of Germany's greatest estates, from the Saar valley.
The Müller family has been at the Scharzhof, below the village of Wiltingen on the Saar, since 1797, when an ancestor bought the property at auction after the church lands of the region were secularised. The estate's fame rests on the Scharzhofberg, a steep, south-facing slope of weathered Devonian slate whose wines are among the most sought after in the world. This bottling is the estate wine, drawn from the family's younger vines and surrounding parcels and made in exactly the same way as its grander siblings: whole-bunch pressed, fermented slowly with the cellar's own yeasts in old wooden casks, and left with a touch of natural sweetness at very modest alcohol.
Serve well chilled, at around 8 to 10 degrees, as an aperitif or with lightly spiced Asian food, crab or fresh cheeses.
