Equis Cornas 2020

Equis Cornas is the Graillot family’s Cornas, made from organically farmed granite-slope fruit bought from a single long-standing grower.

Cornas is the smallest of the Northern Rhône’s red appellations, a steep amphitheatre of granite on the west bank where Syrah ripens more readily than anywhere else in the north. Equis is the négociant label of Maxime Graillot and Domaine des Lises, and this wine comes from vines the family has known for decades, farmed organically by their owner Elie Bancel. Three parcels contribute: a quarter from a 20-year-old plot on the slopes of Les Chaillots, a quarter from 35-year-old vines at La Sabarotte, and half from La Côte, where 80- to 90-year-old vines sit on a fifty per cent gradient. The Graillots call the picking date and send their own team to harvest. Vinification follows the Lises Crozes method with around a quarter whole bunches, with some used 600-litre casks added, and the wine is bottled unfiltered after an extra year of ageing.

Drinking now with air and holding well for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, peppered steak or slow-cooked beef cheeks.
