Equis Equinoxe Crozes-Hermitage Rouge 2021

Equis Equinoxe Crozes-Hermitage Rouge is a deliberately light-framed northern Rhône Syrah from an organically farmed gravel site at Pont de l'Isère.

Crozes-Hermitage is the largest appellation of the northern Rhône, and its flatter southern sector, with deep alluvial gravels, gives Syrah that is fruit-driven and early-drinking rather than austere. Equis is the négociant label of Maxime Graillot and Thomas Schmittel, and Equinoxe is sourced chiefly from a mature, gravelly, organically farmed site at Pont de l'Isère owned by a neighbour of the Graillot family, with grower and producer working closely together. Roughly 80 per cent of the fruit is destemmed and fermentation takes place in concrete tanks and large wooden tronconique vats, with a degree of carbonic maceration, followed by nine months of ageing in the same vessels and no new oak. Graillot aims for what he calls a hyper-light wine, though the intensity of fruit keeps it from thinness.

Drink now and over the next five years, lightly chilled, with charcuterie, grilled sausages or roast pork. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees.
