Equis Equinoxe Crozes-Hermitage Rouge 2022

Equis Equinoxe Crozes-Hermitage Rouge is a northern Rhône Syrah drawn from an organically farmed gravel site at Pont-de-l'Isère.

Crozes-Hermitage is the largest of the northern Rhône appellations, wrapping around the hill of Hermitage; the southern sector near Pont-de-l'Isère is flat, warm ground where alluvial gravels and galets sit over clay, giving fleshier and earlier-drinking Syrah than the granite terraces to the north. Equis is the label of Maxime Graillot and Thomas Schmittel, working alongside Domaine des Lises. The fruit is grown by a friend and neighbour of the Graillot family who owns and manages the site organically, and the two work closely together — a collaboration that has steadily lifted the Equinoxe cuvée. Roughly 80% of the fruit is destemmed and fermented in concrete tanks and large wooden tronconique vats with a degree of carbonic maceration, then aged for nine months in the same vessels.

Made for drinking young, over the next four to five years. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, merguez sausages or roast root vegetables.
