Description
Faiveley Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the nine grand crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, the largest and most decorated commune of the Cote de Nuits.
Charmes-Chambertin lies directly downslope from Le Chambertin itself, on the flatter side of the Route des Grands Crus, where the soil carries a little more depth than the steeper ground above. It is among the biggest of the Gevrey grand crus, in part because growers in neighbouring Mazoyeres-Chambertin may sell their wine under the Charmes name. Pinot Noir is the sole grape, raised in oak barrels with a proportion of new wood appropriate to grand cru fruit. Faiveley was founded at Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1825 and has passed through seven generations of the same family, assembling along the way one of the largest holdings of premier and grand cru land in Burgundy. Erwan Faiveley took charge in 2005 and oversaw a shift towards gentler handling in the cellar.
Decant an hour ahead and serve at 16 to 17C with game, roast beef or truffled dishes; it is built to age for a decade and well beyond.
