Description
Famille Hugel Schoelhammer Riesling is a single plot Riesling from the Schoenenbourg slope above Riquewihr, made only in years the family considers worthy.
The Schoenenbourg rises steeply behind Riquewihr on marl, gypsum and sandstone, and has been named as one of the finest sites in Alsace since long before the grand cru system existed. Schoelhammer is drawn from one small parcel within it, farmed and picked separately, and was introduced by the Hugel family as their most ambitious Riesling; it is not produced every year. The wine is fermented dry, raised slowly in the old oak casks the family has used for generations, and held back at the estate for several years before release. Hugel has been in Riquewihr since 1639, and the wine carries the name of the plot itself rather than the wider slope.
Cellar it if you can, and serve at around 10 to 12 degrees with lobster, turbot or free-range poultry in a delicate sauce.
