Description
Famille Perrin Vinsobres Les Hauts de Julien Vieille Vignes is an old vine red from one of the cooler, higher crus of the southern Rhone.
Vinsobres lies in the Drome, on slopes rising well above most of the southern Rhone vineyards, and the altitude gives cooler nights and a later harvest than the valley floor. It was promoted from Cotes du Rhone Villages to full cru status in 2006, the first village in the Drome to be granted it, and appellation rules require a substantial share of Grenache alongside Syrah or Mourvedre. Les Hauts de Julien comes from the estate's oldest Grenache, planted on stony, well-drained terraces, blended with Syrah and aged in large wood rather than new barrels. The Perrin family, of Chateau de Beaucastel, farm organically here as elsewhere.
Decant and serve at around 17 degrees with roast lamb, game or braised beef; it holds well in the cellar for a decade.
