Description
This is a Corsican Pinot Noir made by François Labet, better known for Château de la Tour in the Clos de Vougeot.
Île de Beauté is the island-wide IGP that covers wines made outside Corsica's own appellations, and it permits international varieties the AOCs do not, which is how a Burgundian grower comes to be making Pinot Noir here. François Labet, who also runs Château de la Tour in the Clos de Vougeot, brings a Côte d'Or eye to the project, and the result is a Mediterranean Pinot with plenty of personality rather than a pale imitation of Burgundy. The vineyard lies on the east coast, in the Haute-Corse department, at 400 metres above the town of Ghisonaccia, where the altitude tempers the summer heat and the nights stay cool through the ripening season. The wine is made in a direct, unoaked style that keeps the fruit forward and the tannins light, and it is bottled under screwcap.
Drink young, over the next two or three years, and it takes a light chill well; serve at 16-18°C or a touch cooler with charcuterie, grilled tuna or roast vegetables.
