Description
Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Spätlese is a classically fruity Mosel Riesling from a family estate that has farmed the Brauneberg since 1605.
Brauneberg sits on the left bank of the Middle Mosel, where the river swings south and the slope rises in a steep wall of weathered blue Devonian slate. The Juffer is that slope, and it has been ranked among the finest sites in Germany since the nineteenth century, when the wines still sold under the village's older name of Dusemond. Fritz Haag is now run by Oliver Haag, who took over from his father Wilhelm. Fruit is picked selectively at Spätlese ripeness, whole-bunch pressed and fermented cool in stainless steel and traditional Fuder casks, with the fermentation stopped to leave around 73 grams per litre of residual sugar balanced against the high, slate-driven acidity of the site.
Sweet but light in alcohol and never heavy, cut through by piercing acidity; serve well chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees with spiced Asian dishes, blue cheese, or simply on its own.
