Georges Duboeuf Fleurie 2023

Georges Duboeuf Fleurie is a Gamay from the cru that has been called the queen of Beaujolais for as long as anyone has been ranking them.

Fleurie lies between Moulin-à-Vent and Chiroubles on pink granite, its slopes breaking down into a thin, sandy soil that suits Gamay particularly well. The chapel of the Madonna stands on the hill above the village, a landmark for the whole appellation. Georges Duboeuf set up at Romanèche-Thorins in 1964 and made his name by selecting and bottling from a wide network of growers, an approach that put the cru villages in front of drinkers who had previously known only Beaujolais Nouveau. Gamay is hand harvested, as the region requires, and fermented whole bunch in the semi-carbonic style.

Serve lightly chilled at around 14 degrees with charcuterie, roast chicken or a mushroom tart; it is at its best in the first three or four years after the harvest.
