Gilles Robin Crozes-Hermitage Alberic 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Gilles Robin Crozes-Hermitage Alberic is the estate's old vine Syrah, fermented with whole bunches and raised in demi-muids, here in magnum.

This is the domaine's flagship red, named for Gilles Robin's grandfather, and it comes from the oldest Syrah on the property in Les Chassis, the stony glacial terrace south of Tain where rounded galets over clay give ripe but structured fruit. The vines are more than thirty years old, the fruit is fermented with 100 per cent whole bunches, and the wine is aged in demi-muids. Keeping every stem in the ferment adds aromatic lift, a savoury edge and a finer tannic frame, while the demi-muid, at 600 litres roughly double the size of a barrique, gives slow oxygenation with far less oak flavour than a small new barrel. The magnum format, holding two bottles, ages more slowly still.

Structured and savoury, and built for the table and for keeping; serve with roast lamb, duck or game at around 17 degrees after a decant.
