Girlan Alto Adige Pinot Bianco 2024

Girlan's Alto Adige Pinot Bianco comes from hand-picked fruit on the Cornaiano hillsides at 450 to 500 metres.

Alto Adige growers almost all make a Pinot Grigio for the export market, but at Girlan it is Pinot Bianco that repays the closer look. Cantina Girlan has worked out of Cornaiano, in the Oltradige hills above the Adige valley, since 1923, and this wine comes from the co-operative's mineral-rich slopes between 450 and 500 metres, where warm days and cold alpine nights hold acidity in place. The fruit is hand-picked, the juice ferments in tank, and roughly ten per cent goes through malolactic conversion, enough to add a little flesh to the wine's cool frame without blunting it. No oak is used. What stands out is the precision of weight and texture, with pithy minerality and an alpine tang closing the wine out, at a price that remains one of the region's better arguments.

Drinking well now and for the next three years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled prawns, roast chicken or a fresh mountain cheese.
