Description

Girlan's Pinot Grigio comes from hillside porphyry soils at 400 to 500 metres and is made in a savoury, saline style rather than a fruity one.

Oltradige, on the west bank of the Adige valley, is the heart of Alto Adige white production, and the soils here are porphyry, formed by ancient volcanic activity and reworked by ice-age sedimentation. Cantina Girlan has worked these hillsides from its base at Cornaiano since 1923. The fruit for this wine is grown between 400 and 500 metres, hand-picked and gently pressed, then fermented cool in stainless steel and left on fine lees for texture and grip. Nothing is added by way of oak. The point of the exercise is to make a Pinot Grigio with more spine than the variety's commercial reputation suggests: pale and precise, savoury rather than overtly fruity, with a saline mineral thread running through it. Delicate, but not simple.

Best drunk within two or three years of release. Serve at 10-12°C with asparagus, white fish or lighter charcuterie.
