Description
Platt & Riegl is Girlan's Pinot Bianco from old vines at 600 metres on the gravelly soils of the Appiano Monte.
Pinot Bianco is the variety Alto Adige makes its most serious whites from, and altitude is what gives them their tension. These two sites at Cornaiano and Eppan Berg sit at around 600 metres in the lee of Mount Mendola, on gravelly, mineral-rich ground where snowmelt and cold nights slow ripening. Cantina Girlan, a co-operative working out of Cornaiano since 1923, treats this as one of its senior bottlings: the vines are old, the fruit is hand-harvested, malolactic conversion is only partial, and half the wine is vinified in 5,000-litre oak casks with the rest in steel. That combination builds a broader, satin-textured wine than the variety's easy-going reputation suggests, without covering the site's chalky, saline character or the grapefruit-pith bite on the close.
Drinking well now and worth keeping five years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with scallops, veal with cream sauce or a dish of alpine cheese and speck.
