Girlan IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti 448 Bianco 2023

Girlan 448 Bianco takes its name from the 448 metres at which the fruit is grown, and from a local Tyrolean expression meaning hurry up.

The Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT allows Alto Adige growers to blend across varieties and sites, and this white uses that freedom to combine 45% Pinot Blanc with roughly equal parts Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Girlan is a growers' co-operative at Cornaiano, in the hills south of Bolzano, and all the fruit for this cuvée comes from the mineral-rich hillside vineyards of the Cornaiano canton at the altitude the label refers to. Height matters here: the wide gap between warm days and cold alpine nights holds acidity and aromatic definition in the grapes, which is what gives the wine its airy weight, closer to a Loire or Savoie white than to anything richer. Fermentation and maturation are handled in stainless steel to keep the fruit crunchy and the finish clean, and no oak is used.

Drink it young, over the warmer months, with antipasti, grilled prawns or a plate of alpine cheeses. Serve at 10-12°C.
