448 Bianco is Girlan's hillside blend of 45 per cent Pinot Bianco with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, named for the altitude at which it grows.

The name carries two meanings: 448 is the height in metres of the Cornaiano vineyards the fruit comes from, and quattro quattro otto is a local Tyrolean way of saying hurry up. Cantina Girlan, founded at Cornaiano in 1923, farms these mineral-rich hillside sites in Oltradige, where cool nights and thin alpine soils hold acidity and keep alcohol in check. Pinot Bianco accounts for 45 per cent of the blend and gives it shape, with the remainder split between Chardonnay for breadth and Sauvignon Blanc for aromatic lift. Winemaking is deliberately plain, in tank and without oak, so the fruit stays crunchy. The weight is closer to a Loire or Savoie white than a richer Italian one: airy and energetic, textural as it builds in the glass, and finishing clean and grippy.

Drink now and over the next couple of years. Serve at 10-12°C with antipasti, grilled fish or a goat's cheese salad.
