448 Bianco is Girlan's hillside white blend, mostly Pinot Bianco with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, named for the altitude at which it grows.

The name works twice over: 448 is the height in metres of the Cornaiano vineyards the fruit comes from, and quattro quattro otto is a local Tyrolean expression meaning hurry up. Cantina Girlan, founded at Cornaiano in 1923, farms these mineral-rich hillside sites in Oltradige, where cool nights and thin alpine soils keep acidity high and alcohol modest. Pinot Bianco makes up the bulk of the blend and supplies the frame; Chardonnay adds a little breadth and Sauvignon Blanc a lift of aromatics. Vinification is straightforward and reductive, with no oak, so the wine keeps its crunch. In weight it sits closer to a Loire or Savoie white than to a richer Italian one, airy and energetic, building texture in the glass and finishing with a grippy, clean edge that makes it a genuinely useful by-the-glass option.

Drink now and over the next two years. Serve at 10-12°C with antipasti, fried whitebait or a simple goat's cheese salad.
