Description
Girlan 448 Rosso is an alpine blend named for the roughly 448 metres above sea level at which its grapes are grown.
The wine sits under the broad Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT and brings together two indigenous Südtirol varieties, Lagrein and Schiava, with Pinot Noir, which has shown a particular affinity for the terroirs of Alto Adige. The Lagrein comes from the deep, sandy soils of the Bassa Atesina, a warmer pocket well suited to ripening that variety, while the Pinot Noir and Schiava are grown on the sunny, well-aired hillsides around Cornaiano, where Girlan is based. Raising is split between tank, barrel and concrete, which keeps the fruit clear and the texture light. The result is a cool, fleshy alpine red with red berry, cherry and red plum character and a lick of herb and spice, folded into a fine, juicy texture.
Drink young, within three years, and treat it as you would a good Beaujolais; serve lightly chilled at 14-16C with speck, roast pork or mushroom pasta.
