Description
Girlan 448 Rosso is a blend of Alto Adige's three key red varieties, named for the 448-metre altitude of the co-operative's historic farmstead.
Alto Adige is Italy's alpine north, a German-speaking province where the reds are built on freshness rather than weight. Cantina Girlan, founded in 1923 at Cornaiano, is one of its long-standing co-operatives and takes its name and this wine's title from the altitude of its original farmstead. The blend brings together Lagrein, Schiava and Pinot Nero grown on mineral-rich soils shaped by glacial sedimentation. Lagrein comes from deep, sandy sites in the warmer Bassa Atesina, where it ripens fully; Pinot Nero and Schiava come from the sunny, well-aerated hillsides of Cornaiano, a spot Pinot Nero has taken to particularly well. The fruit is hand-picked into small crates to keep the bunches intact, destemmed and fermented slowly at controlled temperature in steel, then put through malolactic conversion and aged in concrete, so nothing gets in the way of the fruit.
Drink now and over the next two or three years, lightly chilled if you like. Serve at 14-16°C with grilled meats, game birds or a spicy mountain cheese.
