Goulée by Cos d'Estournel 2016

Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is a Left Bank Bordeaux from the northern Medoc, made by the team at a Saint-Estephe second growth.

Goulee takes its name from a hamlet near the northern tip of the Medoc peninsula, well beyond the classified communes, where the vineyards lie close to the Gironde estuary on gravel over clay. The project was launched by Cos d'Estournel in the early 2000s with the idea of bringing a classified estate's winemaking to an unfashionable corner of the region. Merlot takes a larger share of the blend here than it would in Saint-Estephe, filled out by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and the wine is matured in oak barrel with a good proportion of new wood, in a deliberately modern style that sets it apart from traditional Medoc bottlings.

Approachable young but capable of several years in the cellar; serve at around 17 degrees with grilled beef or duck.
