Gregoire Hoppenot Fleurie Origines 2020

Origines is Grégoire Hoppenot's Fleurie from the parcels of his estate that are in conversion to organic farming, including a good deal of old-vine material.

Fleurie is one of the ten Beaujolais crus, sitting on pink granite that tends to give Gamay perfume and lift rather than bulk. Hoppenot arrived in the cru relatively recently and has assembled holdings across several of its best-known lieux-dits, and Origines gathers the fruit from those vineyards currently converting to organics. It draws on Les Roches, La Roilette, Les Garants and Les Moriers, with an average vine age approaching fifty years. The 2020 crop was picked early, between 25 and 30 August, which helps explain the wine's vibrancy and clarity. Fermentation ran twelve days with whole bunches and ambient yeasts, and the wine was then raised for six months in concrete, so there is no oak between the drinker and the granite.

Drinking well now and worth three to five years for those who like a little development. Serve at 16-18°C, or lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast pork or grilled mushrooms.
