Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde 375mL 2020

Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde is the cornerstone red of the house, from Côte-Rôtie, the northernmost cru of the Rhône.

The name refers to the two halves of the appellation. Côte Brune, on darker iron bearing schist, gives a firmer and longer lived wine; Côte Blonde, on paler granite and gneiss, gives a softer and more perfumed one. Blending the two is the traditional Côte-Rôtie practice, and this wine is its clearest expression. Syrah dominates, with the small proportion of Viognier the appellation permits, often co-fermented with the red grapes, a habit found almost nowhere else in France. Guigal has been based at Ampuis in the heart of the appellation since 1946 and gives this wine around three years in oak, a longer élevage than most producers attempt.

A sensible size for one or two people alongside roast lamb, beef or game; serve at 16 to 18 degrees.
