Description
Guigal Gigondas is a Grenache based red from one of the southern Rhône's senior crus, beneath the rocky teeth of the Dentelles de Montmirail.
Gigondas lies east of Châteauneuf-du-Pape at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, a jagged limestone ridge that shelters the vineyards and lifts them to altitudes where the nights stay cool. The village was promoted from Côtes-du-Rhône Villages to its own appellation in 1971, among the first of the southern communes to be raised to cru status. Grenache must make up the bulk of the blend and is usually joined by Syrah and Mourvèdre, planted on limestone scree, clay and sandy terraces. Guigal, a northern Rhône house founded at Ampuis in 1946, has long worked in the south as well, and gives this wine an extended ageing in oak before release.
Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with slow cooked lamb, game or a rich winter stew, and expect it to improve for a decade.
