Guigal Hermitage Rouge 2019

Guigal Hermitage Rouge is a Syrah from the single granite hill that has been counted among the great vineyards of France for centuries.

The hill of Hermitage rises behind Tain l'Hermitage on the left bank of the Rhône, an outcrop of granite facing due south, and takes its name from the legend of the knight Gaspard de Stérimberg, said to have retired there as a hermit in the thirteenth century. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries its wines were shipped to England at prices matching the first growths of Bordeaux, and were used quite openly to strengthen them. The appellation is small, a little over one hundred and thirty hectares, divided into named climats such as Les Bessards, Le Méal and L'Hermite. Guigal's red is pure Syrah, aged several years in oak before release.

Decant and serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast beef, venison or hare; this is a wine built for long cellaring.
