Guigal Saint-Joseph Lieu-Dit Joseph Rouge 2021

Guigal Saint-Joseph Lieu-Dit Joseph Rouge is a Syrah from the steep granite slope above Tournon that gave the Saint-Joseph appellation its name.

Saint-Joseph was recognised in 1956 and originally covered only six communes around Tournon and Mauves before being extended a long way north and south. Its core remains those terraced slopes, worked by hand because they are far too steep for machinery, and the lieu-dit Saint-Joseph is the historic parcel itself. Guigal came into these vineyards with the purchase of the Grippat and de Vallouit estates in 2001, which brought the family some of the appellation's oldest vines. The wine is pure Syrah, the only red grape permitted here, fermented from destemmed fruit and aged in oak for roughly two years before bottling. Very little is made, and it stands apart from the estate's larger Saint-Joseph bottling.

Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, charcuterie or grilled beef; it drinks well young and keeps for a decade or more.
