Guigal Saint-Joseph Rouge 2021

Guigal Saint-Joseph Rouge is a northern Rhône Syrah from the long line of granite hillsides on the right bank of the river.

Saint-Joseph was recognised as an appellation in 1956, taking in six communes around Tournon and Mauves, and was later extended to run some fifty kilometres along the Rhône. The best sites are the terraced granite slopes facing the morning sun, worked by hand because nothing else will manage the gradient, and Syrah is the only red variety permitted. Guigal has bought and made wine here for decades from its base at Ampuis, where Étienne Guigal founded the house in 1946, and now holds substantial vineyards of its own in the appellation following the acquisition of two long established local domaines. The red is aged in oak casks before bottling, in the unhurried style the house applies from its entry level wines upwards.

Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with grilled meats, roast pork, charcuterie or a mushroom risotto.
