Description
This is a vintage Bastardo madeira from Henriques & Henriques, bottled from one of only two casks of it still held in the company's cellars.
Madeira's Frasqueira or Garrafeira wines are the island's summit: a single variety from a single harvest, held in cask for at least twenty years and a further two in bottle before release, maturing slowly in the warm lofts of the lodges rather than by the heated estufagem used for younger wines. Henriques & Henriques is the leading independent shipper on the island and, unusually, farms a significant share of its own vineyards; it also holds deep reserves of old wine in cask and bottle, some of it well over a century old. Bastardo is the Madeiran name for Trousseau, a red variety once widespread on the island and now barely planted, which makes any bottling of it rare and a wine of this age rarer still. Henriques & Henriques bottled this cask in 2021, the fourth commercial release of the wine after those of D'Oliveira, Leacock and Blandy.
Fully mature and stable for years in the bottle, opened or not. Serve at 14-16°C in small glasses with aged cheese, nuts or on its own.
