Henriques & Henriques Verdelho 15Yo 500ml NV

Henriques & Henriques Verdelho 15 Year Old is an off-dry madeira aged for a minimum of fifteen years in cask.

Madeira is made on a volcanic island several hundred kilometres off the Moroccan coast, and its character comes from deliberate heating and oxidation. The finest wines are aged by the canteiro method, resting in cask in warm lofts for years or decades rather than being heated quickly in estufa tanks. Henriques & Henriques, based at Camara de Lobos on the island's south coast, is one of the few shippers to own substantial vineyards of its own and holds deep stocks of the classic varieties. Verdelho sits in the middle of the madeira sweetness scale, off-dry, fortified once fermentation has run part of its course so that a little residual sugar remains. Fifteen years in wood concentrates the wine and builds the smoky, dried-fruit character of aged madeira while leaving intact the medium body and racy acidity that define this grape.

Madeira is close to indestructible and an opened bottle will keep for months. Serve at around 12°C as an aperitif, with consomme or clear soups, or with prawns and other seafood.
