Henriques & Henriques Verdelho 20YO NV

Henriques & Henriques Verdelho 20YO is a medium-dry Madeira from one of the four classic noble varieties, aged an average of twenty years.

Verdelho sits in the middle of the Madeira scale, drier than Bual and Malmsey, richer than Sercial, and it is the variety most able to hold its fruit character as it ages. Henriques & Henriques works from Câmara de Lobos and is among the few houses to own substantial vineyard land on the island; Humberto Jardim has led its push to make aged blends a serious category rather than a stepping stone to vintage wines. A twenty-year-old blend of this kind demands high-quality base wine, since two decades in cask will expose anything thin. The wood ageing brings out spice, nutmeg, lime peel and smoke, and the acidity that defines all Madeira holds the sweetness in check.

It will keep for months once opened. Serve at 14-16°C as an aperitif, with consommé, smoked almonds or a mature hard cheese.
