Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux 375ml 1985

This is a sweet Chenin Blanc from Domaine Huet's founding vineyard at Vouvray, bottled in half-bottle from the 1985 harvest.

Vouvray covers the tuffeau limestone plateau above the Loire east of Tours, and Chenin Blanc is bottled there as sec, demi-sec, moelleux or sparkling wine according to what the season gives. The domaine was established in 1928 by Victor Huët, who had moved to Vouvray after the First World War; his son Gaston took charge in 1937 and ran it for more than half a century, joined by Noël Pinguet in 1971 and by the winemaker Jean-Bernard Berthomé in 1978. Le Haut-Lieu is the original holding, some fifteen hectares of deep brown clay on the Première Côte, and the roundest and quickest to open of the estate's three sites; Le Mont, added in 1957, has less clay and more stone, and Clos du Bourg the shallowest, stoniest soil of all. Whether a picking is declared sec, demi-sec or moelleux is decided each year in the vineyard. Fermentation is split between tank and old demi-muids, after which the wine spends the winter in old barrels before spring bottling.

A half-bottle matures faster than a 750ml, so this is fully ready. Serve at 8-10°C with foie gras, a fruit tart or Roquefort.
