Jean-Baptiste Souillard Crozes-Hermitage 2023

Jean-Baptiste Souillard Crozes-Hermitage is made in tiny quantity from two granite parcels at Gervans, in the far north of the appellation.

Only about a tenth of Crozes-Hermitage sits on granite; the great majority is alluvial clay under thick layers of galets roulés on the flat land to the south. The northern villages of Gervans and Larnage are the exception, being severed fragments of the same Ardèche granite uplands that give Hermitage its backbone. Souillard sought out these cold slopes for the purity and freshness he wants in his Crozes, and makes only three or four barrels a year. The wine blends two parcels in Gervans: one on pure granite high up the slope, which supplies most of the freshness, and a second on granite and gravel closer to the river. The ferment is mostly whole bunches in stainless steel, followed by more than a year in old barriques between three and ten years of age.

Approachable now and set to improve over eight to ten years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, peppered beef or grilled mushrooms.
