Description
Les Baties is a cool, southeast-facing lieu-dit at Larnage on the northern side of the Hermitage hill, farmed here by Jean-Baptiste Souillard.
Crozes-Hermitage is the largest of the northern Rhône appellations, and most of it now lies on the broad Chassis plain planted after the 1970s. Larnage was the historic heart of the appellation, a valley of stony red clay, loess and fractured, oxidised granite that produces a cooler, finer Syrah. Altitude of about 200 metres and that granite bedrock are the decisive factors, as are the vines themselves, goblet-pruned and planted in the 1950s and 1960s. Dard et Ribo make their Les Baties from vines nearby. Souillard fermented this cuvée with whole clusters and raised it for 14 months in mature casks, giving a dense yet compact Crozes-Hermitage with the purity, freshness and balance that mark his range.
Drinking well now and good for another five to eight years. Serve at 16 to 18°C with roast lamb, peppered beef or braised mushrooms.
