Description
This is the only blended Saint-Joseph in the Souillard range, drawn from three high parcels at Sarras and Andance in the centre of the appellation.
Saint-Joseph stretches along the right bank of the northern Rhône, and its character shifts markedly from north to south. Jean-Baptiste Souillard bottles five wines from the appellation, four of them single sites running from Saint-Pierre-de-Boeuf down to Saint-Jean-de-Muzols; this cuvée blends three vineyards from the middle stretch. He puts the average vine age at around thirty years. All three parcels sit high on the slope at about 300 metres, facing east, on forty centimetres of decomposed granite over granite bedrock, which gives a cooler fruit profile and a more chiselled mouthfeel than the appellation average. Winemaking is the same across the range: spontaneous fermentation and maceration in stainless steel with a large proportion of whole bunches, then maturation in old wood.
Rewarding now with air and good for eight years. Serve at 16 to 18°C with grilled lamb, sausages or roast capsicum and olives.
