Description

Jean-Baptiste Souillard Saint-Joseph Janoune is a mountain Saint-Joseph from an exposed granite hilltop at 320 metres near Andance, made from just two barrels.

Janoune is a lieu-dit on the granite ridge of Andance, part of the Châtelet massif, close to Souillard’s cellar and high enough that the views take in both the Alps and the Massif Central. The vineyard was planted between 1980 and 2000 with massale selection material that gives small berries in compact bunches, closer in appearance to Pinot Noir than to most Syrah, and it is farmed organically by a cousin of Souillard’s father. Exposure at that altitude means late ripening and firm acidity. The wine was fermented and then raised for fourteen months in two mature 225-litre casks, with no new wood involved. What results is fleshy and compact, with inky density and pronounced whole-bunch aromatics over sophisticated fruit and fine-grained tannins.

Worth three to five years and good for a dozen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, braised beef short rib or a dish of grilled mushrooms.
