Description

Amphibolite takes its name from the greenish metamorphic bedrock that dominates the soils in which this Muscadet is grown.

Muscadet Sèvre et Maine lies at the Atlantic end of the Loire, south-east of Nantes, and is planted to Melon de Bourgogne. Jo Landron is one of the appellation's most respected growers, and this cuvée is drawn from vines aged between 35 and 40 years on amphibolite, a hard volcanic rock that is unusual even within the region's mosaic of soils. Where many Muscadets are given long lees ageing for texture, Landron deliberately kept this wine on lees only briefly, wanting to retain as much freshness and cut as possible. Only minor doses of sulphur were used, which blocked the malolactic fermentation and preserved the natural acidity. Bottling took place early, in March, and without filtration.

Best drunk young and cold; serve at 10-12°C with oysters, grilled sardines or a plate of prawns.
