Description
Jo Landron Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Amphibolite is a biodynamic Muscadet named for the greenish metamorphic bedrock that underlies its vineyards.
Muscadet-Sèvre-et-Maine lies south-east of Nantes at the Atlantic end of the Loire, where Melon de Bourgogne ripens slowly on a patchwork of ancient volcanic and metamorphic rock. Domaine Landron farms biodynamically across several of those soil types and bottles them separately rather than blending them away. Amphibolite is the most mineral cuvée of the range, taking its name from the dark green metamorphic stone that dominates the parcels, here worked from vines of 35 to 40 years. Fermentation was followed by only a short period on lees, a deliberate decision by Jo Landron to hold on to freshness and cut rather than build texture. Only minor doses of sulphur were used, enough to block the malolactic fermentation and keep the acidity taut, and bottling took place early, in March, without filtration, to keep the wine as close as possible to the vineyard it came from.
Drinking well now and good for several years yet, it suits oysters, grilled whiting and fresh goat's cheese. Serve at 10-12°C.
