Description

Jo Landron Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Amphibolite takes its name from the greenish metamorphic bedrock beneath the vines, and is bottled early and unfiltered.

Amphibolite is the cuvée most associated with Jo Landron, who farms biodynamically in Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, south-east of Nantes. The vines are 35 to 40 years old, grown over the amphibolite rock that gives the wine its name and much of its briny, iodine character. Where the domaine’s other cuvées build texture through long lees ageing, this one spends only a short period on lees, since Landron wants to hold on to as much freshness and minerality as possible; he calls it a free-spirited Muscadet. Only small doses of sulphur are used, enough to block malolactic conversion, and bottling happens early, in March, without filtration. The result is racy and ultra-pure, all salted apple, white flowers and citrus, with penetrating acidity binding a well-honed texture.

Drink over the next three to five years. Serve at 10-12°C with oysters, whitebait or a plate of prawns.
