Description
Jo Landron Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Le Clos La Carizière is a biodynamic single-vineyard Melon de Bourgogne from old vines on orthogneiss at La Haye-Fouassière.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine lies at the Atlantic end of the Loire, where Melon de Bourgogne on hard metamorphic rock gives dry, saline whites built for the local shellfish. The Château de la Carizière in La Haye-Fouassière dates to 1926; Jo Landron took over its vines in 1998 and began converting them to organic farming straight away, with biodynamic practice following. There are ten hectares here on orthogneiss, planted to vines between 55 and 70 years old. Le Clos La Carizière is drawn from four of those hectares, with yields held as low as 38 hectolitres per hectare. The fruit is picked by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts, and the wine rested on its lees for ten months before bottling, which builds mid-palate texture and savoury depth.
Drinking well now and worth five years or more in bottle; serve at 10–12°C with oysters, grilled sardines or a green-herb salad.
