Description

Jo Landron's Le Fief du Breil comes from a single biodynamic vineyard on one of the few genuine slopes in Muscadet.

Muscadet Sèvre et Maine covers the country south-east of Nantes, where Melon de Bourgogne is grown on the hard metamorphic rocks of the Armorican massif. Le Fief du Breil is a six-hectare, south-facing site above the Sèvre river at La Haye-Fouassière, farmed biodynamically. Its name records a medieval landholding, usually a sign that the parcel was among the best in the district; Breil means next to the forest, and the vines border woodland and old stone walls. The soils carry silex, river pebbles, quartz and granite over an orthogneiss bedrock. The vines are around 45 years old and Landron prunes very short and shoot-thins to hold yields down. The fruit is hand harvested, fermented slowly with indigenous yeasts and raised in the domaine's large underground cement tanks, in this case for a full 30 months on lees.

It is drinking well now but has the structure for a decade; serve at 10–12°C with oysters, grilled prawns or a plate of jambon persillé.
