Description

Jo Landron Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Le Fief du Breil is a biodynamic single-vineyard wine from 50-year-old vines aged 36 months on lees.

Le Fief du Breil is Landron's flagship: six hectares on a south-facing slope above the Sèvre at La Haye-Fouassière, farmed biodynamically. Fief is a medieval term for land associated with the local abbey or duke, which implies quality, since the best parcels tended to be kept by those who ruled; Breil means next to the forest, and the old walls around the vines are another sign of the site's standing. The soils are rich in silex, river pebbles, quartz and granite over a bedrock of orthogneiss, a geologically complex mix, and while Muscadet is generally flat country Landron notes this is a hill by local standards. The vines are fifty years old and low-yielding, and the wine was aged on its lees for 36 months, which builds the smoky, iodine-rich depth and pulpy texture that mark it out.

Drinking well now and capable of a decade or more, gaining mineral crunch as it goes; serve at 10–12°C with oysters, grilled fish or roast chicken.
