Description
Jo Landron Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Le Fief du Breil is a single-vineyard Muscadet raised for twenty-six months on its lees.
Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine covers the flat country south-east of Nantes, where Melon de Bourgogne is grown on ancient metamorphic rock near the Atlantic. Le Fief du Breil is six hectares on a south-facing slope above the Sèvre at La Haye-Fouassière, farmed biodynamically. Fief is a medieval term for land held by the local abbey or duke, which usually meant the better parcels; Breil means next to the forest, and the vines still border woodland and old walls. The soils carry silex, river pebbles, quartz and granite over an orthogneiss bedrock. Jo Landron prunes very short and thins shoots to hold yields down on forty-five-year-old vines. Hand-harvested fruit was fermented slowly with natural yeasts and raised in the domaine's large underground cement tanks, with the long lees ageing giving a wine far removed from the regional stereotype.
Drinking well now and capable of another decade in bottle. Serve at 10-12°C with oysters, grilled crayfish or a mild goat's cheese.
